Masseter Botox for Bruxism in Antalya

The masseter is the muscle that clenches your jaw. In bruxism it works overtime: it enlarges, aches in the morning and wears your teeth down. A small dose of botulinum toxin, placed in that muscle by a dentist, reduces the clenching force for several months. At Tantalya it is planned as a dental treatment for jaw pain and tooth wear, usually alongside a night guard, not as a cosmetic procedure.

Why a dentist, not a cosmetic clinic

Grinding shows up in the mouth first: flattened or chipped teeth, cracked fillings, sensitivity, clicking joints and a jaw that is tired at breakfast. A dentist assesses the bite, the teeth and the jaw joint together, decides whether a night guard, a bite adjustment or the injection comes first, and places the toxin where the muscle actually fires. In Turkey, treating the chewing muscles and the jaw joint with botulinum toxin falls within dental practice; at Tantalya it is done by a dentist after an examination and, where needed, X-rays.

Who it suits

Patients with jaw-muscle pain or morning jaw fatigue from clenching; patients who still ache or keep breaking night guards; a visibly enlarged masseter (masseter hypertrophy) with tightness at the angle of the jaw; a muscular component in TMJ complaints; and tension-type headaches that a dentist links to the chewing muscles. It is not used in pregnancy or breastfeeding, in neuromuscular disease such as myasthenia gravis, over an active skin infection, or with a known allergy to botulinum toxin. Some antibiotics and blood thinners mean postponing, so bring your medication list.

What the appointment is like

The dentist asks you to clench, marks the bulk of the muscle on each side and places a few injections with a very fine needle. The visit usually takes 10 to 15 minutes and needs no anaesthetic; you can go straight back to your day. The muscle does not relax immediately: most patients notice the change within 1 to 2 weeks, the effect is strongest in the first three months, and it typically lasts 4 to 6 months. If the pain returns as the muscle recovers, the dentist decides whether to repeat; with regular treatment the muscle shrinks and intervals often lengthen.

Side effects and what to expect of your face

A small bruise at the injection site, tenderness for a few days and tiring faster when chewing hard food in the first weeks are the common ones. Rarely, a temporary asymmetry of the smile or a hollow feeling in the cheek can occur; both fade as the effect wears off. Dosing the muscle on its anatomy rather than on a fixed number of units keeps these risks low. As the masseter shrinks, the angle of the jaw can soften over several months; that is a side effect of treating bruxism, not the aim of the treatment.

Botox and a night guard together

The injection relaxes the muscle; the guard protects the teeth and the joint. They do different jobs and one does not replace the other. For most patients the plan starts with a custom night guard from our own laboratory; the injection is added when muscle pain continues despite the guard. If the teeth are already worn, restoring them is part of the same plan. Bruxism and obstructive sleep apnoea often go together, so snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing or daytime sleepiness lead to a sleep study before anything else.

Cost: how it is worked out

The fee depends on the product, the number of units each side needs, how many areas are treated and the follow-up plan. It is quoted after the examination, with the night guard and any tooth repairs on the same written plan, so you see the whole picture before deciding. Visitors to Antalya can combine the injection with a check-up or whitening on the same visit.

FAQ

Can a dentist do masseter Botox?

Yes. Botulinum toxin for the chewing muscles and jaw joint, to treat clenching, grinding and muscle pain, is within dental practice in Turkey. At Tantalya it is given by a dentist after an examination of the teeth, bite and jaw joint.

How long does masseter Botox last?

The effect typically starts within 1 to 2 weeks and lasts 4 to 6 months, varying from person to person. Repeating is a clinical decision based on whether the pain returns; intervals often lengthen as the muscle shrinks.

Will it change the shape of my face?

As the masseter shrinks, the angle of the jaw can soften over a few months. At Tantalya the treatment is planned for bruxism and jaw pain; any change in facial contour is a side effect, not the goal.

Does it hurt?

A fine needle, a few seconds of stinging per point, no anaesthetic. The visit usually takes 10 to 15 minutes and you return to normal activity straight away.

Will it stop my grinding completely?

No. It reduces the force of clenching and the muscle pain. Protecting the teeth still needs a night guard, and causes such as stress, sleep quality and sleep apnoea are assessed separately.

Can I have it done on a short visit to Antalya?

Yes. The examination and the injection fit in one appointment, and the night guard can be made by our own laboratory during the same stay. A follow-up by WhatsApp replaces the in-person check if you have already flown home.
